Australia opener David Warner has made a surprising announcement just days before the World Test Championship Final against India at The Oval. Warner revealed that he will retire from Test cricket at the end of the upcoming Australian summer, following the Test match against Pakistan in January at his home ground in Sydney. This means he will not be participating in the two-match Test series against West Indies. However, Warner plans to continue playing white-ball cricket for Australia until the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA.
Warner expressed his desire to score runs in order to secure his place in the team, acknowledging that his performance during the Ashes 2019 tour was below par. He averaged only 10 in that series and struggled against deliveries from Stuart Broad. The 36-year-old hopes that his recent form in the IPL will translate into success in red-ball cricket.
Warner emphasized his goal of playing in the 2024 World Cup and mentioned that he will have to play in various tournaments, including the IPL and other franchise leagues, to maintain his rhythm before the World Cup. He also hinted at the possibility of playing a Sheffield Shield game for New South Wales.
It’s a significant decision by Warner to retire from Test cricket, and he will be aiming to make the most of his remaining time in the format, starting with the World Test Championship Final and the subsequent Ashes series against England.
